Center for Global Change Funds Student Research

In 1993, the Center for Global Change began a competitive grant program to support student research in the areas of global change and earth system science. This program encourages students to think about the interdisciplinary connections of their research, and to practice the skills necessary to compete successfully for grant funds.

Review of proposals is modeled after the National Science Foundation peer review system. Proposals receive reviews from UAF faculty. A review panel is appointed to discuss and rank all proposals and make funding recommendations. Verbatim, anonymous reviews are returned to the student, along with a panel summary.

About twenty-five proposals have been submitted each year across a number of disciplines. Awards are usually in the range of $3,000-$5,000. Awardees for the past three years are listed below. Students are expected to submit a final written report and to present their results at a public forum, such as an institute or departmental seminar, or a professional meeting.

The next two issues of global glimpses are dedicated to student research results. We thank the 1994 student grant recipients for their contributions. Jamie Roush's research on the Bering Glacier was featured in the June 1994 issue of global glimpses. This issue also contains a summary of statewide global change education activities provided by Dr. Elena Sparrow.
